Biting Cold Engulfs Sonamarg as Mercury Dips to Minus 10.5°C

GANDERBAL: Sonamarg witnessed severe cold conditions as the minimum temperature plunged to minus 10.5 degrees Celsius, making the high-altitude tourist resort one of the coldest places in the Kashmir Valley, officials said on Saturday.

The sharp dip in temperature followed recent snowfall and subsequent clearing of skies, which intensified night-time chill across the region. Residents said the extreme cold has resulted in freezing of water bodies and supply lines, while movement during late-night and early-morning hours has become increasingly difficult due to icy road conditions.

Sonamarg, which often remains cut off for prolonged periods during peak winter, continues to endure harsh living conditions as winter tightens its grip. Officials said adequate arrangements have been put in place to ensure the availability of essential supplies, adding that the situation is being closely monitored in view of the intense cold wave.

The plunging temperatures have further aggravated hardships for residents and personnel stationed in the area, with demand for heating appliances and fuel witnessing a noticeable surge.

Meanwhile, officials of the Meteorological Department said such low temperatures are typical for Sonamarg during peak winter, particularly after snowfall spells followed by clear nights. The department has forecast cold and dry weather to continue, which may lead to a further dip in night temperatures in high-altitude areas, including Sonamarg.
