SDA Cracks Down on Snowmobile Misuse in Sonamarg After Repeated Environmental Violations

Strict Regulations on Snowmobile Operations to Protect Sonamarg’s Fragile Ecosystem: SDA

KANGAN: In a significant step towards environmental conservation and sustainable tourism—an issue repeatedly highlighted by Valley Online (VON) through multiple reports on the misuse of natural resources—the Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) has issued a comprehensive circular vide No. CEO/SDA/2025/2956-64 dated 22-01-2026, enforcing strict regulation of snowmobile bike operations across Sonamarg, an ecologically sensitive tourist destination.

The circular, issued under the provisions of the Tourist Trade Act, Adventure Tourism Guidelines and environmental protection rules, mandates immediate and strict compliance by all concerned stakeholders. The move aims to safeguard Sonamarg’s fragile meadows, land and natural landscape while ensuring public safety and regulated adventure tourism—concerns consistently raised by Valley Online in its environmental coverage.

As per the orders, snowmobile bikes will be permitted to operate only on routes specifically designated and notified by the competent authority, and any deviation from approved routes has been strictly prohibited. Only operators holding valid and subsisting written permission issued by the SDA will be allowed to operate, and such permission must be carried at all times for inspection.

To prevent environmental degradation, snowmobile operations will be allowed only in areas with adequate and safe snow cover. Operations in areas with low, patchy or insufficient snow—particularly fragile meadows—have been completely prohibited, except on specifically notified routes. This measure aims to prevent land damage and preserve Sonamarg’s delicate ecosystem, an issue repeatedly flagged by VON in its reports.

In order to curb overcommercialisation and congestion, the SDA has fixed a maximum cap of 20 snowmobile bikes operating at any given time in a designated meadow or operational area. Any violation of this limit will invite strict action, including heavy penalties, seizure of bikes and suspension of operations in the affected areas.

The circular further clarifies that snowmobile bikes shall be operated only by authorized and trained drivers, and under no circumstances will tourists or unauthorized persons be allowed to operate them.

Enforcement agencies and field staff have been directed to conduct regular inspections and monitoring to ensure strict compliance. Any deviation from the issued instructions will result in cancellation of permission ab initio, along with legal action as per law, without any prior notice.

The orders, enforced with immediate effect, reflect a zero-tolerance approach towards activities threatening Sonamarg’s natural environment and reaffirm the administration’s commitment to eco-friendly and sustainable tourism development.

The decision has been welcomed by local stakeholders and environmental observers, who say it addresses long-standing concerns regarding unregulated adventure activities—concerns repeatedly highlighted by Valley Online—and marks a decisive step towards protecting Sonamarg’s pristine landscape.
