Kolkata rape-murder case: CBI report reveals gaps in investigation

Kolkata: On Thursday, the CBI submitted a status report to the Supreme Court on the investigation into the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. According to IANS sources, the agency has identified several gaps in the case.

The case is being heard by a division bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. This marks the second hearing, with significant attention on the proceedings.

One key issue is the delay between the discovery of the body in the hospital’s seminar hall on the morning of August 9 and the notification to the local police station. The CBI is investigating why hospital authorities, particularly former principal Sandip Ghosh, took so long to inform the police.

Ghosh has been interrogated by the CBI daily for up to 14 hours since last Friday, including on Thursday, marking his seventh consecutive day of questioning. The CBI has also summoned his driver for questioning.

Another gap is identifying the person who first discovered the body. Despite extensive interrogation of hospital staff, the CBI has yet to determine who found the body first, with conflicting statements complicating the investigation. The CBI believes that identifying this individual will help answer many unresolved questions in the case.

The body of the woman doctor was found under mysterious circumstances on August 9, leading to widespread protests in Kolkata and across the country. One person has been arrested in connection with the case so far.
