Establishment of forest food model by Divisioin of Silviculture and Agroforestry

Division of Silviculture and Agroforestry kick started the first plantation drive of 2024 at Faculty of Forestry.

 

The main aim of plantation was establishment of forest food model.

In this model about thirty identified forest food tree species will be planted which are hardy in nature and are having food value.

 

Dean FoF Prof. SA Gangoo told that after successful establishment of this model here at faculty of forestry, its replica can be made in forests to avoid Man Vs Animal conflict which has become a menace these days. He further added that we can go for selling of berries in the name of forest berries.

 

Dr. G.M Bhat Professor & Head SAF and PI of the Project added that this model is suitable for rehabilitation of degraded lands. It will improve microclimate of this area and will help in their biodiversity enrichment and conservation. Some important species which are to be planted includes Persimon, wild fig, Korean cherry, Wild cherry, wild Apricot, Zizyphus, wild pear, etc.

 

He also thanked Dean FOF all his staff members especially DR N.A Pala, Dr T.A. Rather, Dr Dutt and Dr Megna for their support and cooperation in establishing this model.

Dr. P.A Khan Professor and Head FBT told that it will act as carbon sink and also will provide a food security for wild life and source of revenue for cultivators and their biodiversity will also be conserved and enriched.
