Playground and Open Gym Equipment Damaged, Some Allegedly Stolen; Questions Raised Over Maintenance, Public Expenditure and Protection of Community Assets
By: Valley Online News
KANGAN: A children’s park developed during the previous Panchayat tenure with recreational facilities, including an open-air gym and various playground equipment, has reportedly fallen into a state of neglect, raising serious concerns over children’s safety, the maintenance of public infrastructure and the protection of government-funded assets.
The park, originally established to provide children with a safe recreational environment and encourage physical fitness among local residents, has allegedly been subjected to vandalism, theft and prolonged neglect over the past couple of years.
Photographs captured by Valley Online News reveal the deteriorating condition of the park, with several playground installations damaged, swing structures left without seats, slides lying dismantled on the ground and litter scattered across parts of the premises.
According to information gathered by Valley Online News, several recreational installations have been damaged, while some equipment has reportedly been stolen by unidentified persons.
More concerning is the potential danger posed to children who continue to visit the park and play around broken or damaged installations. The presence of unsafe equipment has raised fears of injuries and accidents, highlighting the urgent need for safety inspections and necessary repairs.
Sources told Valley Online News that funds for the development of the park were reportedly utilised from various government schemes and funding sources, including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), CD Panchayat, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) and other Panchayat development funds.
However, the exact amount spent and the financial contributions under the respective schemes remain to be officially verified.
Despite the reported utilisation of public funds to develop the recreational facility, its present condition raises important questions about maintenance, monitoring, accountability and the long-term sustainability of infrastructure established for public welfare.
The situation also highlights a collective failure of responsibility involving both the concerned government authorities and sections of the local community.
While government departments and local administrative bodies have a responsibility to ensure proper maintenance, periodic inspections and protection of public infrastructure, members of the community also have an equally important role in preventing vandalism, theft and misuse of facilities established for their benefit.
Public infrastructure developed through government funds is ultimately meant to serve the community. Its destruction or neglect not only represents a loss of valuable public resources but also deprives children and young people of much-needed recreational spaces.
Valley Online News emphasises that the protection of public property must be treated as a shared responsibility between the administration and the local community. Government-funded infrastructure cannot serve its intended purpose unless authorities ensure proper maintenance and citizens actively contribute to its protection.
The deteriorating condition of the park calls for immediate attention from the Rural Development Department, concerned Panchayat authorities and local administration to assess the damage, identify unsafe installations, repair or replace damaged equipment and investigate the reported theft of public property.
There is also a need to establish a proper maintenance and monitoring mechanism to ensure that recreational facilities developed under various government schemes do not suffer a similar fate.
The larger question remains: Who is responsible for safeguarding public assets developed through government funds, and who should be held accountable when facilities meant for public welfare are allowed to deteriorate ?
Through this report, Valley Online News seeks to draw the attention of the concerned authorities and the wider community towards the urgent need to restore the park and ensure that children can once again enjoy a safe and functional recreational environment.
The protection of public infrastructure requires not only administrative intervention but also collective responsibility, public awareness and a sustained commitment to preserving community assets for future generations.
Editorial Note: This report is based on photographic documentation and information gathered from local sources. Details regarding funding allocations, expenditure and reported thefts remain subject to official verification. The concerned authorities are welcome to provide their response or clarification for subsequent coverage.
