Birla Open Minds School teachers protest against termination of faculty member

Teachers being forced to take online classes from home after day-long hectic job at school

Srinagar: Amid rainfall, the teachers of Birla Open Minds School in Galander Pampore, staged a protest on Saturday against the Principal and other school administrators for allegedly terminating one of their staff members without prior notice.

The protesting teachers alleged that the entire staff is now being threatened to be terminated.

Speaking to KNO, the protesting teachers stated, “We are approximately 20-25 teachers sitting here in protest as one of our teachers was terminated by the Principal without any advance notice or explanation.”

“We conduct regular classes at the school and, in addition to that, we are being instructed to provide online classes after 6 PM. Despite being exhausted from our daily workload at school, we continue to teach online. However, one of our teachers refused to comply, as he had some serious condition at home, but unfortunately he has been terminated.”

The teacher further expressed concern, saying, “He lives in a far-flung area and arrives home very late. It is difficult for him to give online classes. The same applies to us. Where should we go?”

Principal of the school, Mehnaz Rehman when contacted, told KNO, “If you have any video clips or evidence from my school, go ahead and post it. Make it viral.”

“I am here to manage the school, and it is the school’s decision whether we conduct online or offline classes. The aforementioned teacher refused to provide online classes, leading to his termination.”

“As far as protest is concerned, I have contacted the Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) and Chief Education Officer (CEO), and I will discuss the matter with them,” she added.
