KANGAN: The Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) has sought registration of an FIR against toll plaza staff at the Shutkadi entry point in Sonamarg for alleged overcharging of sanitation fees from vehicles.

The action comes in the wake of a viral video circulated on social media, in which a YouTuber alleged that ₹200 was charged from a private vehicle—much higher than the sanitation fee prescribed by SDA. The video triggered widespread outrage and was extensively shared by locals and tourists, who accused toll staff and the contractor of arbitrary charging and harassment.

Taking prompt cognisance of the issue, SDA forwarded an official letter to the concerned authorities, directing that an FIR be lodged to investigate the matter and fix responsibility. Sources said the authority has taken a serious view of the allegations, as such practices not only inconvenience tourists but also harm the image of Sonamarg as a major tourist destination.

Earlier, citizens had raised concerns over the absence of proper signboards and authorised rate lists at the Shutkadi entry point, alleging that the lack of transparency enabled overcharging. They demanded that clear rate lists be prominently displayed to prevent exploitation of visitors.

Meanwhile, social activists and local residents have welcomed SDA’s swift action, terming it a positive step towards accountability and rule enforcement. They, however, stressed the need for strict monitoring and regular inspections to ensure such incidents are not repeated in the future.

The development also follows intervention by the SDM Kangan, who had earlier taken strict notice of the issue and ordered an inquiry. Officials have assured that further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation, and anyone found guilty will face strict legal consequences.
